Welcome to Behind the Rules. This site provides independent, professional comment about Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Games Workshop and the Design Studio from a former insider. It also covers other wargames, roleplaying games, computer games and board games, all with the same experienced insight.

My name is Graham Davey, Studio Editor for the Games Development team for 4 years, 2006-10. You’ll find my name in the last 60 or so army books, codexes and main rulebooks published by Games Workshop. I edited every word, and wrote quite a few too. I gave feedback to the Games Developers on their background, rules and army lists, and helped to playtest every book. Before this I was the Editor of Battle Games in Middle-earth, and before that I was Production Editor of White Dwarf (back in the Paul Sawyer ‘Fat Bloke’ era). I’ve played in around a dozen White Dwarf battle reports, and all in all I worked at Games Workshop for 13 years. Since leaving GW, I’ve been working freelance for River Horse, Perry Miniatures and Fantasy Flight Games (writing for both the 40k and Warhammer roleplaying games).

Why am I telling you all this? Simply so you can be confident that I know what I’m talking about.

So having established my credentials, what am I going to write about? Games Workshop, Warhammer, 40k, obviously – nothing original so far. The real difference is that unlike the vast majority of people writing on these subjects, I’ve been there, in the Design Studio, in the Games Development team, sitting next to Jervis, Alessio, Mat and Phil, working on every book, every page. I know what it’s really like, what goes on, why decisions are made, how books are written, how army lists are created.

I can also write without the filter of marketing speak that inevitably lays over any official Games Workshop communication, and censors quite what the staff can say. For example, you won’t catch the White Dwarf editorial discussing the relative merits of other miniatures companies or the fate of the Squats. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to reveal the release schedule for the next three years or anything else confidential, and I won’t be addressing rumours of anything Games Workshop hasn’t announced officially. However, I am in a unique position to give you a genuine insight, and provide expert comment on new products as they come out.

I’m also an avid player of many other games, and I’ll be offering my sage opinion on a host of other rulesy subjects, including other wargames, board games, roleplaying games and computer games. I’m guessing a lot of you have similar interests, and if not then maybe I can tempt you to try something new…

One other thing. As I write, I’m sure it will be clear that I am fundamentally pro-Games Workshop. I make no apologies. I’ve been collecting, painting and gaming with Citadel miniatures for more than 25 years. The company is full of fantastically talanted people and good friends. It is, for the most part, a brilliant place to work, and its products are, for the most part, simply awesome. But for the first time I’m able to be honest about the bits that aren’t so good too…

Have you any idea how closely I will scrutinize these for punctuation errors? Just kidding – a very enjoyable and interesting read.

Soundly constructed and well thought out. Hope you’re enjoying writing them, ‘cos they make for a good read.
